Description

Mascara Barb (Dawkinsia Assimilis)

Overview:
The Mascara Barb, also known as the Assimilis Barb, is a striking freshwater fish that gets its name from the distinctive black line resembling mascara over its eyes. It is a mid-sized barb, known for its lively nature and beautiful coloration, making it a popular choice for larger, well-planted community tanks.

Origin:
Native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of India and Sri Lanka, the Mascara Barb thrives in habitats with clean, oxygen-rich water.

Feeding:
An omnivore by nature, Mascara Barbs are not picky eaters. They enjoy a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, as well as some vegetable matter.

Tank Mates:
Mascara Barbs do well with other active, similarly-sized fish such as other barbs, danios, rainbowfish, and larger tetras. They should be kept in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and aggression.

Aggression:
Generally peaceful, but can be slightly boisterous. Their semi-aggressive nature may intimidate slow-moving or long-finned species, so they are best kept with similarly active fish.

Experience Level:
Ideal for intermediate fishkeepers due to their active nature and preference for clean, well-maintained water. They require a spacious tank and regular care to thrive.

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 22–27°C (72–81°F)

pH: 6.0–7.5

Hardness: 5–12 dGH

Provide ample swimming space and moderate water flow to mimic their natural habitat, and your Mascara Barbs will reward you with their energetic, vibrant presence!
